But what is trust, really?
Think about what happens when someone chooses to trust you. They are making themselves vulnerable. They are placing something important in your hands and relying on you to take care of it. Sometimes it’s a small concern. Sometimes it’s a major decision with significant consequences.
Either way, trust is never given lightly.
That’s why being a trusted advisor requires more than having credentials after your name or simply telling someone they can trust you. Trust must be earned and continually reinforced through your actions.
You build trust when you listen to understand rather than simply respond. You strengthen it when you communicate proactively, provide updates, and follow through on your commitments. These behaviors reassure people that you heard them, understand what matters to them, and are committed to helping them succeed.
When trust is present, uncertainty decreases. Risk feels more manageable. Clients gain confidence that important matters are being handled well, allowing them to focus on other priorities. In many ways, you become a source of stability and confidence during times of complexity and change.
That is the real value of trust.
Being a trusted advisor is both a privilege and a responsibility. It is a role that requires consistency, reliability, and genuine care for the people who place their confidence in you.
So here’s the question for this week:
How well are you fulfilling the responsibility of being a trusted advisor?
