When we talk about trust in our profession, we usually think about our clients or the integrity of the work we do. And that’s appropriate. CPAs have long been recognized as one of the most trusted professions, and that’s something worth protecting.

But lately, I’ve been wondering if we spend enough time thinking about trust inside our firms.

As AI continues to take on more of the technical work, the human side of leadership becomes even more important. Technology can help us work faster, uncover insights, and improve efficiency. What it can’t do is build trust between people.

Trust is built one interaction at a time.

It’s built when leaders follow through on their commitments. When managers have honest conversations instead of avoiding them. When team members know they’ll be supported, challenged, and treated with respect. Those moments may seem small, but they shape the culture of a firm.

In our Partner Pipeline work at PartnersCoach, we often ask firms what makes someone truly ready for partnership. Technical expertise gets people noticed. But that’s rarely where the conversation ends. Partners tell us they’re looking for people they trust with clients, with their teams, with difficult decisions, and with the future of the firm.

That kind of trust doesn’t develop by accident. It has to be built intentionally.

Guy Gage touched on this in his Monday Message last week. Trust isn’t something we simply expect because of our title or experience. It’s earned through consistent actions over time.

As we prepare the next generation of leaders, let’s continue investing in technical excellence and technological opportunities. But let’s give the same intentional attention to the professional skills that make great leaders.

In a profession increasingly supported by AI, trust may become one of the few competitive advantages that only people can create.
