As CPAs, we enter 2026 carrying the weight of tax and audit deadlines, not to mention keeping up with the ever-evolving regulations. But leadership isn’t just about managing compliance, it’s about creating capacity for what truly moves the needle. This year, what are you intentionally making space for?

Here are practical, actionable steps to clear that space and step up as a strategic leader:

Make space for strategic thinking. Block 2-4 hours weekly on your calendar (treat it as non- negotiable time) for high-level client advisory. Audit your current workload: identify 3-5 routine tasks you can delegate or automate using AI and other tools. This shift frees you to deliver proactive insights on growth, risk, and tax planning. All of which will transform you from focusing on compliance to becoming a trusted strategic partner.

Make space for developing others. Schedule regular (at least monthly) 30-minute one-on-one sessions with your team members. Focus on their specific growth areas: assign stretch projects, provide substantive feedback, and discuss career aspirations. Your investment in your team builds stronger, more loyal professionals.

Make space for exceptional client experiences. Outline your current client journey and identify 2–3 friction points (e.g., delayed responses or manual document requests). Implement proactive communication: set up automated status updates via client portals, schedule quarterly check-ins beyond tax season, and personalize interactions with tailored insights or resources. Gather feedback through quick surveys after key deliverables to refine your approach. Being intentional with your client interactions will boost retention, increase referrals, and turn clients into advocates.

This new year, declutter your calendar and mindset. Implement one step this week, start small, and stay consistent. As firm leaders, the space you create today shapes the profession tomorrow.

What actionable step will you take first in 2026?
