During a recent call with partners, one name kept coming up. A senior manager – fully committed, but pushing himself at an unsustainable pace. Everyone agreed he was heading straight for burnout.

We advised the partners to step in to help him sustain his effort over the long term. Prioritize. Involve others. Know when enough is enough. Confer with partners. Perfection in everything isn’t the goal.

After a pause, one partner said something important: “That conversation would be an act of care.” She then reflected on her own experience – a particular time when she pushed herself beyond what was sustainable, but no one said a word. As she spoke, we could hear the impact that her leader’s silence had on her. What she needed back then was someone to acknowledge her effort and sacrifice, not ignore it.

That’s the point: leader silence is not neutral. It communicates something – usually the wrong thing.

Leaders today can’t afford to be unaware of the contributions of others. The effort, the sacrifice – they are real. Ignoring them isn’t toughness. It’s neglect.

This isn’t about being soft. It’s about being intentional. Sometimes leadership looks like saying: “I see how much you’re putting in. It hasn’t gone unnoticed and I appreciate it.” That takes seconds. Costs nothing. Isn’t difficult. But the impact is enormous.

So ask yourself: have you become a silent leader? When was the last time you acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of others? And more importantly – why haven’t you said it more often?
