In a recent firm presentation, we explored what leadership looks like today. One thing is clear: this is a new day, very different from the environment in which most firms operated over the last 50 years.

The pace of change is extraordinary. No sooner do we absorb and adapt to one wave of change than another arrives. Technology advances. Client expectations shift. Talent wants something different. Business models evolve.

The result is that our window of certainty has collapsed to a fragment of what it used to be and uncertainty seems to be the reality.

For accounting professionals, this creates a particular leadership challenge. We are trained to value facts, gather information, analyze alternatives, and make informed decisions. Those instincts serve us well. But leaders today rarely have the luxury of waiting until enough of the information is available.

Wait too long for certainty, and the opportunity passes. Keep delaying decisions, and eventually you are no longer shaping the future – you are scrambling to catch it. Some firms have delayed important changes for so long that their options have narrowed dramatically.

Leading through uncertainty is now an essential leadership capability.

That doesn’t mean being reckless or abandoning thoughtful analysis. It means developing three virtues: confidence, courage, and humility.

That combination creates leaders that people want to follow.

Strong-willed, demanding leadership becomes less effective when people recognize the ambiguity around them. They don’t need leaders who pretend uncertainty doesn’t exist. They need leaders who acknowledge it while providing direction and creating confidence in the journey ahead.
