Just like Superman and every other superhero, when at your best, you are flat out awesome. When you think about it, you can remember times when you and your work made a noteworthy impact and you relished in it. I’m talking about the times you put forth effort, did the right things and BAM! You were awesome. You became more than a technical grunt—you were…well—a superhero. At least to them in those moments. Why doesn’t it happen more often? How can you replicate that experience—for their sake and yours?

The primary reason you don’t demonstrate your awesomeness more often is that you haven’t identified and managed your kryptonite. Every superhero has their own debilitating nemesis and you have yours. It’s that one thing that hampers you, holds you back and keeps you from being awesome consistently.

For some, its staying focused on things long enough to knock them out and get things done. Or it’s planning your priorities and not losing sight of them amidst all the distractions. For others, its having difficult conversations now instead of letting them go. Or thinking deeply about your team members and how to accentuate what they do well instead of trying to fit them in positions and roles where they will always struggle. Or battling with having the right things to say but failing to say them right.

You already know where to begin. It could be your attitude, your perspective, or some knee-jerk reaction. You know it because it’s the first thing that comes to mind. You know it because you have been criticized by others for it. You know it because it bleeds you of your enthusiasm. You know because it frustrates you.

Today, commit to taking on your kryptonite. Hold yourself accountable by telling someone of your intentions. Or email me. Or tell your mom or your gold fish. But do it. This week. The world is waiting for your awesome.
