Recently, I was coaching a manager who was preparing to attend a multi-day industry conference. Like many professionals, she was feeling a mix of excitement and pressure. She wanted to maximize the opportunity, but she also knew that three full days of networking could be draining.

So I asked her a simple question: “How do you want to show up?”

After some discussion, she identified three goals. First, she wanted to make at least ten meaningful new connections. Not collect ten business cards. Not add ten people on LinkedIn. Ten genuine conversations with people she could learn from and potentially stay connected to after the conference.

Second, she realized she didn’t need to force all of those interactions into the first day. Opportunities would be everywhere: during sessions, meals, hallway conversations, and evening events. When we stop treating networking as a single event and start viewing it as an ongoing opportunity, the pressure begins to disappear.

Finally, as an introvert, she recognized the importance of protecting her energy. Rather than filling every break with conversation, she intentionally scheduled quiet time to recharge. A short walk. A few moments alone. Time to process what she was learning.

The result? She returned energized, with new relationships, fresh ideas, and a sense of accomplishment instead of exhaustion.

Before your next conference or networking event, ask yourself:

  • What specific outcome do I want from this experience?
  • How many meaningful connections would make this event a success?
  • Where will I create space to recharge and reflect?
  • How do I want people to remember me?

Showing up with intention changes everything. Don’t just attend the event. Decide who you want to be while you’re there.
