The Difference Dilemma

As we step into a new year, there is a sense of fresh beginnings. Psychologists call it the Fresh Start Effect. We have visions of things being different and we capture that optimism in resolutions to do something different. While early motivation gets us started into our resolutions, we soon experience the “slog” of doing something different and eventually give up. Then we are confronted with the dilemma of wanting things to be different without having to do anything different. Hmm.

The Stress Example

A perfect example is our experience with stress. We devise many versions of stress reduction in our resolutions: plan better, work smarter, delegate appropriately, communicate more. We tend to do fairly well initially, but then revert back to our old ways. Nothing different; same result.

Professional life, while satisfying and enjoyable, is also demanding, with busy seasons, large workloads, client demands, and managerial expectations. It’s human nature to externalize the sources of stress, attributing it to everything around us and seldom looking within. What could we possibly do differently that would give us a better result that will make this year different?

The Natural Response

During stressful moments, our bodies instinctively activate the fight-or-flight response. This heightened state of arousal can be productive in short bursts, but when sustained, it can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a diminished sense of well-being. It’s a cycle that many find difficult to break.

Amidst the chaos, it’s crucial to recognize that we have the power to shift our emotional state. Instead of succumbing to our stress, we can choose gratitude, a powerful tool that activates the a state of calm and relaxation. That’s what is different: choosing to express gratitude instead of dwelling on workload, deadlines, client demands.

It almost sounds too simple. Actually, it is—but it requires us to be different. The real power lies in acknowledging our agency in how we respond to these challenges. By choosing to express gratitude, we take responsibility for our emotional well-being and actively engage in a positive mindset.

Prepare for 2024

As we navigate the challenges of 2024, let us be mindful of the power we hold to choose our emotional responses. By embracing gratitude, we enhance our own well-being and contribute positively to our environment. This year, let your efforts be more than just a response to external demands—let them be a reflection of your commitment to being the best version of yourself—and make this year different!
