High performers see it immediately. At first they push back. Over time, they either lower their own standards to fit in or eventually leave. A few stay committed and, ironically, are often resented for it.
It’s easy to spot weak link choices in others—especially when you’re the one covering the gap they create. The harder question is: Where are you making those choices?
Remember, our brains are wired for efficiency and comfort. When the bar around us drops, the temptation to follow is strong. “If everyone else is doing it, why bother putting forth more effort?”
The answer is integrity. When you take the easier route instead of the right one, you create a downstream burden someone else must carry. That’s a weak link choice.
Common internal rationalizations include:
- I’m too tired to do it the right way.
- No one will notice.
- It doesn’t really matter.
- My supervisor is just being picky.
- This is good enough (when it isn’t).
- This is too much trouble.
- It’s not necessary.
Weak link choices in a project never stay personal – they ripple across the entire team.
Your choices define both your performance and your professional reputation. Keep your standards high, even when it would be easier not to.
