Beliefs matter

Many professionals are well into the spring season. Some are prepared because they got into shape and are ready for the challenge. Others are less prepared and are struggling to keep up, even though the season just began. But being season-ready is ultimately a mindset shaped by beliefs.

Yes, beliefs matter. What we think and believe greatly influence our lives. Paying attention to our beliefs is crucial because they shape our perceptions of the world around us.

Beliefs Reign

This is more than psychology 101. Your beliefs are present and active every day of your life, especially in your professional career. If you are unaware of how your beliefs shape your emotions and actions, you will unwittingly be controlled by them.

For instance, I remember speaking to a senior manager who declared that she really enjoyed tax season. I have to say, that’s not the typical response I hear. So I asked her to explain. She said she loved the challenge of the work and interacting with her staff. Yes, it was challenging, but not to the degree of being overly stressful. This demonstrates how her beliefs shaped her energy and enthusiasm in tax season.

Beliefs Influence

Consider the beliefs that shape your life. For instance, do you view meeting deadlines as stress-inducing hurdles, or as victorious finish lines to conquer? Both situations bring pressure, but if you perceive deadlines as stressors, you’ll likely seek evidence to validate that notion. Conversely, if you see deadlines as challenges to overcome, you’ll find evidence that reinforces this belief and boosts your motivation. Remember, beliefs aren’t fixed— you have the power to mold them to your advantage rather than letting them hinder you.

Beliefs Change

After reading this message, take a moment to reflect on a situation or person that affects you negatively. Then, think about the beliefs that justify your feelings in that situation. Does your perspective bring you a sense of gratitude? Do your beliefs about your situation energize you? Do you remember to be thankful for your noble profession? Because your beliefs truly do matter.
