What Is Purpose?

As I prepared for my conference presentations this week, one of the observations I made in my research is a reminder of a fundamental truth that doesn’t get enough airplay.

In a nutshell, it’s that people (and organizations) exist for a purpose. Simply stated, there are significant contributions that are yours to make that benefit others and, while doing so, creates meaning-fulfillment in you. This truth is hardwired in you. It’s not something you invent or create; it’s already there. It is your work to discover it.

Meaning-fulfillment is an intangible that touches your core and brings forth the energy, motivation and drive such that you get lost in a pursuit. –the reason to do what you do. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi named this phenomenon as “flow” and wrote a book about it.

Evidence Of Purpose

Meaning-fulfillment is just as important as other fulfillments, like survival, stature, mastery, autonomy, and recognition.  While they are all necessary, they are insufficient for addressing meaning-fulfillment. Only discovering and living your purpose will fill that void.

This truth has been iterated by ancient philosophers and modern-day researchers alike. They all arrive at the same place.  Aristotle said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”  Simon Sinek challenges you to “know your why.” Meaning-fulfillment can only be filled when you are actively engaged in purpose-driven pursuits that are yours to take on.

Find Your Purpose

As you take time off this season to rest and renew, reflect on your core purpose. Ask yourself what are the contributions you have made that fulfill you?

  • What kind of work produces a core-level sense of satisfaction that is more than pride in a job well done?
  • If you could design your perfect job, what would you load it with and rid it of?
  • What contributions do you want to make that others will remember you by?

Those who actively seek their core purpose are the ones who experience meaning-fulfillment. It will be a lifelong quest, but necessary and worth it to discover your purpose.
