Quite A Year

We’ve come to the end of the year, which for many, was quite a year unlike any other. While some would rather forget it, please don’t. Instead, take a moment to appreciate all that has happened and celebrate that you came through it. No matter how difficult or challenging 2021 was, you can be proud of two things: your accomplishments and your achievements. They are different and both are opportunities for celebration.

Accomplishments

Accomplishments are the milestones you reached. They had finish lines that you crossed. They include everything from passing a part of the license exam, being promoted, meeting deadlines, completing projects, etc. There is finality to your efforts; a definite end where you can check it off the list. Congratulations.

Achievements

Achievements are more about progress. There are no goal lines to cross because there is no ending. Instead, it’s about movement in a desired direction. Achievements are often about your personal character and interpersonal effectiveness. For instance, consider your progress while working on managing your stress, or how you interact more effectively with people who frustrate you. These are examples of growth and they shouldn’t be dismissed, minimized or ignored simply because there is no goal line. They are as important to your career satisfaction as accomplishments.

Celebrate!

Interestingly, when you consider your accomplishments and achievements, you are likely to experience a sense of pleasure from your successes and progress. We know that those who celebrate their wins in a difficult time avoid career boredom, career fatigue, or worse, career burnout. For that you should be thankful. Yes, having gratitude even for a difficult year is possible.

As you celebrate this holiday season, remember your accomplishments and achievements…with gratitude.
