Therefore, you need to pay attention to what you dwell on because it shapes how you experience your life. You’re not a victim of your environment. You’re in control of it—at least your experience of it. I’d like to offer three things to consider that will put you in a position to really enjoy your career.
First, have fun. What is it about your work that you enjoy? What do you look forward to? What payoff (other than a paycheck) do you get? When you put your work into perspective, you focus on the things that sustain you and remind yourself that you’re doing what you do because you choose it. No one is forcing you.
Then, have faith. You have to believe that what you do matters. Others are better off because of the work you do for them. If you underestimate anything, it’s the real value of what you produce. How could you make it even better?
Finally, be grateful. I’ve said numerous times before—you make a good living, being in the upper 10% of the economic ladder. Not only that, there is no glass ceiling. Your profession has a tremendous upside. Being grateful reminds you of how fortunate you are and keeps you humble as you live a life worthy of your stature.
That’s it. Have fun. Have faith. Be grateful. It doesn’t get any better than that. If you never do anything with these weekly messages, do something with this one. Write it down. Memorize it. Recall it periodically throughout the day. Make it your life’s motto; at least until you find a better one. And enjoy your career like never before.
