As we’ve written and said so many times (here, here and here), no one aspires to be mediocre. Everyone wants to do well. So why don’t we?

A major reason is we aren’t protecting our attention. Our attention is precious and it’s a huge influence in our progress in everything, especially our professional development. It allows us to focus on what is important and not be swayed by distractions.

We can’t delegate protecting our attention. We can’t blame someone, or something else, for not protecting our attention. It’s ours and ours only. It’s time to man (and woman) up!

So what should we do? The research is clear:

1. Be Self Aware. Catch yourself when you are distracted.
2. Don’t Berate. Be kind and gently redirect yourself back to your priority.
3. Anticipate. Identify and remove potential distractions.

Be the performer you desire to be. Protect your attention.
