tires that are out of balance. They wobble at slow speeds and shake at high
speeds. The only fix is to get them balanced. Then you can enjoy a smooth ride.
Not a lot of difference from the wobble and shake of a
professional career out of balance. It makes you and everyone around you
miserable. So get yourself in balance.
Those who are in balance typically share three traits.
The first is that they have clear aspirations. They know where they are going.
It’s important enough to them that they spend time thinking about and planning
their efforts, executing their plans and monitoring their progress. They have
direction, set goals and measure success.
The second trait is that they are always learning,
growing and changing. Just because doing something a certain way worked in the
past doesn’t mean that it is good for you, your clients or the firm going
forward. They don’t scoff at or minimize change. In fact, they look for new
ways, try them and improve on them. It is effort well-spent and keeps them
challenged and sharp.
The third trait of balanced professionals is that they
resist being on autopilot. It’s so tempting to go from one job or deadline to
the next like a mindless robot. Instead, they see their work as the playing
field where they do what they love. Practicing their technical specialty and
applying it to client situations is fun. Or did you forget?
This week, love your work, your profession, your career.
Remember to practice in ways that puts yourself in balance. Instead of grousing
about the things that prevent you from being satisfied, focus on what you enjoy
and do more of it. Remember, it’s your career. Make it more of what you want it
to be. You are in charge.
