Delaying the Inevitable
From Guy Gage’s recently published article, When Leaders Tolerate the Intolerable, you can see how avoiding challenges can affect your firm. By not taking action on the next step, you will simply delay the inevitable. And the delay just makes things worse.
Give it Your Best Effort
My family recently returned from a vacation in Utah. One of the adventures was a hike my husband and daughter took. If you have ever hiked Angels Landing, you will know that it was named by a preacher who said the mountain top was so high only angels could land there. The landscape is beautiful, and the views, especially from the top, are breathtaking.
My husband and daughter set out to give the climb their best effort. After hours away, they came back all smiles. They had made it, all the way to the top; with 360* panoramic photos to prove it. When the adrenaline wore off, I asked my daughter, who is not your typical adventurer, how she made it to the top. She said “I just focused on taking my next step.”
What if we tackled all difficult situations with the same attitude? Like focusing on the next step. Too often, we look at the mountain top and can’t imagine getting there, so we freeze and stay in place.
Focus on the Next Step
Difficult situations don’t have to be confrontational or negative. It is about just focusing on the next step. When we break a problem down into more manageable pieces, it feels less like scaling a mountain. Take a deep breath, assess the situation, and create a path that is simply one step at a time.
