As I coach managers and senior associates to partnership, and younger partners to seasoned partners, the one factor almost everyone struggles with is how they view themselves at the next level. The fact is, they don’t.

As you would expect, their self perceptions are based on how they functioned in the role they just left. They haven’t found a vision of themselves at the next level. The problem comes when others don’t think they’re living up to what they should be doing or at a level they are capable of.

This is a difficult problem to overcome because unless you know how to challenge and expand your own perceptions, you’re left to live within them. Sure, you can “fake it ‘til you make it” in certain areas, but there is no consistency or comprehensiveness to it. You need to develop a work/role style that allows you to step into the responsibilities and expectations that are yours now.

It took a current client several sessions to fully grasp her new role and function. We had to define the position, her responsibilities, what others expected of her, and work through her current apprehensions that prevented her from getting there. Now her progress is accelerating nicely. I asked her what the difference was and she reported that now she can now visualize herself in her new role in her attitude, behavior and disciplines. And she is enjoying the subtle changes that are making all the difference.

So, what is the next level for you? Surely you haven’t decided you’ve reached your pinnacle. There is more in you to grow and contribute to your clients, your firm and your own personal satisfaction. Expand your self perceptions. If you need help, call me.
