fulfilling, based on the latest research and following other professionals who experience
professional fulfillment. They all share these two traits: 1) they have certain
disciplines they follow and 2) they voluntarily make themselves accountable to
perform. You were challenged to do just that: commit to a discipline or two and
be diligent to make yourself accountable.
How did you do?
If you’re like most, you didn’t do a doggone thing. You
read the message, nodded in agreement, then went into your week just like you
did the weeks and months prior. And you wonder why professional fulfillment
continues to elude you. What do you expect?
Since you obviously missed the last message, here it is
again. Do something different. Take something in your life and organize it: a
pile on your desk, your inbox, your email, the pile on your floor. Doesn’t
matter; just pick something. The research shows that by doing something, no
matter how simple, will not only make you feel better, it will carry over into
other areas. BUT YOU HAVE TO DO SOMEHTING.
And don’t forget to put yourself on the hook by promising
to deliver something to someone AND THEN DO IT. Refuse to miss the deadline,
regardless what happens.
When you do these two things, you begin the ball rolling
toward professional fulfillment. It’s a great ride, but it has a cost. You have
to follow your disciplines and be accountable for your results on a regular
basis.
I’m going to ask you again
next week: what did you do to make your professional enjoyment increase? If you
answer is nothing, you deserve to be miserable because you’re acting like a
mindless slug.
