In the midst of writing last week’s Monday message, I was preparing to facilitate a session titled Courageous Leadership: Navigating Change, Fear, and Uncertainty. During that session, one of the attendees questioned the use of the term fear. She didn’t feel that fear was a significant factor in dealing with change—at least for herself.

That may very well be true for her, leaders often experience change differently from their teams. Those driving change often focus on its potential benefits, making fear less noticeable. But for those being led (or forced) through change, the experience can be vastly different. Uncertainty, loss of control, and fear of failure can trigger a stress response in the brain, activating the amygdala and setting off physiological reactions like heightened anxiety or resistance.

Change disrupts routine, which the brain perceives as a threat. This can lead to avoidance behaviors, increased stress, and even disengagement. Leaders must recognize this emotional impact. Leading through change requires understanding and open dialogue – acknowledging emotions, providing transparency, and creating a space where people feel secure and supported.

So, as leaders navigating change, be mindful of how your team feels. Fear isn’t a weakness—it’s a natural response. Acknowledging it and guiding others through it with understanding is what makes leadership courageous.

As a leader, your ability to acknowledge and navigate fear directly impacts your team’s success. Don’t just push through change—guide your team with empathy, clarity, and reassurance. Take time to listen, validate concerns, and foster an environment where uncertainty feels less like a threat and more like an opportunity for growth.
