do their work. However, rather than remove barriers for them, you can actually create
difficulties.
I’m talking about the liberties you take because they make your job easier. I’m talking about when those liberties make your people unproductive and frustrated. I’m talking about using those liberties and ignore how you’re the problem.
-Like when you renege on a deadline you promised them, regardless
of the reason, putting them in “wait mode” until you get good and ready to
deliver.
-Like when you give them something at the last minute and
expect them to put everything else aside so you get what you want, as if to say
what you’re working on is more important.
-Like when you allow dissent or conflict to continue by not
addressing the situation. All parties look at you and wonder how you’re
supposedly the one in charge but refuse to take charge by not involved.
When your personal convenience makes it tough for others
to be productive, you aren’t leading. You’re just in a position to expect
others to conform to what is convenient for you.
Now, there is certainly a point where your staff have to
get in sync with you. I’m not talking about that and don’t use it as an excuse
to blow off this message.
Being the leader is more than a position to be enjoyed.
It is a responsibility that requires you to grow up and get past what you want.
You have to consider the productivity of your group, team and firm instead of
what makes your job easier.
This week, ask your staff for one thing you do that makes
it difficult for them to be more productive. I promise, there is at least one
thing. If they tell you, act on it. If they won’t, you’ve got bigger problems…like
your leadership.
