have to live beyond the borders of your comfort zone.
How many times have you said, “But I’m not comfortable doing that” (insert your least favorite
responsibility in a whiny-butt whimper). To which I ask, SO WHAT? What does it
matter that you don’t like it? If it’s yours to do, then quit whining and do
it. Is it facing a difficult client? Having a marketing conversation? Or just
letting go of the stranglehold you have on the work and delegate it?
In a new partner training program I conducted recently,
we dissected the issue of having the hard conversations with staff. We
discussed examples of what a hard conversation is, what makes it so hard, what we
do to avoid having them and the results of not having them. Then I taught them
a model and a few tips that make it easier to do so. By the end of the seminar,
everyone demonstrated they could have the hard conversation.
After the program, I asked one of the participants of the
odds of her having a difficult conversation. She gave a beautiful response. I still don’t look forward to it and would
rather not, but I can and will when I have to.” She won’t be the one others
rely on to fill that responsibility. But she can and will when necessary. Atta
girl! You’re over yourself.
Do you realize how many times you avoid the difficult and
the uncomfortable? The numerous excuses you use? The ways you convince yourself
you shouldn’t have to? Get over yourself. It’s not about you. It’s about you
assuming the responsibilities that are yours.
You like the prestige of the
title and position. You enjoy the paycheck. You feel good having accomplished
your achievements. It’s time to step up and assume the responsibilities that go
along with the benefits. It’s time to get over yourself.
