During busy season, we’re moving toward the next deadline. The next return. The next client request that lands in our inbox. Outside of tax season, we’re moving toward the next engagement, the next meeting, the next initiative.
Movement is constant in this profession.
But here’s the problem: sometimes we forget that we’re always moving toward something. When our days are driven entirely by deadlines and demands, it’s easy to lose sight of direction. We stay busy, but we don’t feel progress. We start to feel scattered, discouraged, or like we’re spinning in circles despite working harder than ever.
Activity alone doesn’t create momentum.
Direction does.
The only way to end up where you actually want to be (in your career, your leadership, or your firm) is to intentionally move toward it. That might mean developing the skills needed to lead a team. Building stronger client relationships instead of just completing compliance work. Or stepping back long enough to clarify what you want the next stage of your career to look like.
Otherwise, the current of deadlines and demands will decide for you.
You are always moving.
The question worth asking is simple: Is where you’re headed where you actually want to go?
