A while back, one of my colleagues would periodically ask, “Are you having fun, yet?” At first it was amusing. After a while, it became annoying. One time, while I was under pressure to get something done, he asked the question again. Enough is enough, so I cornered him as to why he keeps asking that ridiculous question.

He paused, then replied that when we let the stress of the moment overcome us, we forget why we chose our careers in the first place. We could have gotten out long ago, but we enjoy what we do and believe it is valuable. So we continue. We just need to remember to enjoy our work, even in the stressful times. Made sense to me.

Since then, I use the question as code to awaken the fun and enjoyment of my chosen career that may be covered up at the moment. It’s so easy to lose sight of how our professional service makes a significant contribution to clients, colleagues and the community. While it doesn’t take away the pressure of the moment, we are energized beyond “just getting it done.” We have a contribution to make and a purpose to fulfill.

So, are YOU havin’ fun, yet?
